In a China.org.cn exclusive interview, BAIC's vice general manager Jian Zhang said his forecast of an expanding market for e-vehicles is based on the nation's focus on creating a better ecological environment as urged in the 18th CPC National Congress held in the fall of 2012.

"Environmental protection is the precondition of sustainable development, which applies to both a company and to the entire society," Zhang said, explaining how his theory originated.

"The government has already unveiled policies to stimulate this sector, but it still takes two to three years for the market to grow," he said, maintaining that the expanded market would in turn call for better accommodating facilities, such as charging poles.

The access to adequate charging stations has been a problem that bottlenecked the popularity of electric cars, including the well-known Tesla, which recently debuted in China. Tesla is reportedly cooperating with multiple Chinese partners in launching what are called "supercharge stations" in major cities such as Beijing and Shanghai.

While acknowledging the importance of building more charging centers, Zhang also noted that improved battery technology would also be helpful.

"There may be easier ways of charging an e-car, such as remote charging or inductive charging. And, the whole e-car industry could use standard batteries, so that they have better compatibilities," he said.
